Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers

Researchers have conducted a study on 240 patients with actinic keratoses sores, precancerous growth on the skin, from several hospitals around the U.S. and they have discovered a possible prevention to non-melanoma skin cancers. They used a product called Celebrex, which is commonly used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis (arthritis caused by a breakdown of the lining of the joints), rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis caused by swelling of the lining of the joints), and ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis that mainly affects the spine. What they have found is that when they applied the cream to the sores they did not turn into skin cancer like they would normally have done. Research is still in progress, but the results have made a large discovery in the fight for skin cancer. Its exciting when a possible cure for certain types of skin cancer is found, because that means more lives saved. It also gives people hope. Cancer has been a major issue for many years and with the spread of so many types it can be a nerve racking thought. But for those suffering with skin cancer, this moment means more to look forward to.

  1. Fascinating!!! I have been to the dermatologist due to those actinic keratoses you mentioned. I find it amazing when a drug developed for one use becomes a 'solution' for other health issues-like the Celebrex. Keep up with this info-skin cancer is so prevelant and such a killer.
